For the past three school years, Keatsway received gold certification from EcoSchools, an organization that promotes environmental education. There are six main areas which our environmental initiatives address. They are: ·Teamwork and Leadership ·Energy Conservation ·Waste Minimization ·School Ground Greening ·Curriculum ·Waste Minimization ·Environmental
Stewardship and the School Community
Our students have shown a real commitment to being EcoKids who truly care about our environment. We have many initiatives in place. Here are a few: • 100% Solution to Waste Litterless Lunch Days We encourage students to bring a 100% Solution to Waste Litterless Lunch every Tuesday and Wednesday. This means bringing lunch in a lunch bag or box, packing food in re-usable containers, bringing drinks in a reusable drink container, using cutlery that is re-usable (other than plastic disposable cutlery) and avoiding all
waste (zip lock bags, wrappers, disposable water bottles).
• Green Bin Pilot Project We are the only school in Waterloo Region that is a part of the Green Bin program. Our efforts are contributing to the Region’s study of the feasibility of launching the Green Bin program in other schools.
• Zero Garbage in the Breakfast Club Our Breakfast program is proud of its “zero garbage” initiative. Everything that the students use goes in the green bin. That includes food scraps, paper plates, paper cups and biodegradable cutlery. No garbage is generated!
• Schoolyard Greening Our Greening Committee has an ongoing plan to further enhance our schoolyard. A recent initiative was the installation of a labyrinth.
We continue to work on the EcoSchools initiatives and hope to once again be certified as a Gold School this school year.
