Dear Keatsway Family:

Welcome to Keatsway School. The staff will endeavour to make your stay here enjoyable and a profitable learning experience for your child. The staff at Keatsway School strives to provide programs relevant to student needs and interests.  Support and cooperative effort between home and school is required to help your child be successful. For this reason, we encourage you to become involved in school activities (participating in class outings, assisting in the library or classroom, attending school functions).  Please call us at 519 886-1650 to discuss any concerns or to arrange for parent-teacher interviews.  To Keatsway children, we trust that you will find the programs challenging and satisfying.  It will be largely through your efforts that your school experience will be exciting and happy.

Sincerely,
The Keatsway Staff

ADMINISTRATOR'S MESSAGE

I dreamed I stood in a studio and saw two sculptors there,
The clay they used was a young child’s mind
And they fashioned it with care.
One was a teacher; the tools she used were books, music and art.
One a parent who worked with a guiding hand
And a gentle loving heart.
Day after day the teacher toiled with touch that was deft and sure, while the parent laboured by her side
And polished and smoothed it o’er.
And when at last their task was done, they were proud of what they had wrought;  for the things they had molded into the child could neither be sold nor bought.
And each agreed he would have failed
If he had worked alone, for behind the parent stood the school
And behind the teacher, the home.
    -By Cleo V. Swarat

Welcome to Keatsway P.S. for the 2011/2012 school year.  A school's administration endeavours to fashion and sustain a quality, learning environment that will equip all students with the knowledge, skills and values they need to be successful in life.

Current change in education necessitates that we plan collaboratively with all our “sculptors”.  As an administrative team we appreciate the support and counsel of School Council.  We praise the work of our parent volunteers.  We encourage and provide opportunities for staff development and discussion to plan and assess effectively their programs and improve instruction in accordance to Ministry and Board curriculum expectations.

We look forward to an exciting year as home and school work together in an atmosphere emphasizing care, respect and quality education.

Keatsway is Proud to be a Gold EcoSchool!
On December 10, 2010 the Ontario Minister of the Environment John Wilkinson came to our school to view how an elementary school can be environmentally proactive and reduce garbage to the waste stream by over 70%.  Five EcoKid Ambassodors spoke to the Minister to share with him the successes of the program at our school.  For more information about his visit you can read the following link from the media:

Gold ecoschools SMALLv1.jpg

For the past three school years, Keatsway received gold certification from EcoSchools, an organization that promotes environmental education.  There are six main areas which our environmental initiatives address.  They are:
·Teamwork and Leadership
·Energy Conservation
·Waste Minimization
·School Ground Greening
·Curriculum
·Waste Minimization
·Environmental Stewardship and the School Community

Our students have shown a real commitment to being EcoKids who truly care about our environment. We have many initiatives in place.  Here are a few:
• 100% Solution to Waste Litterless Lunch Days
We encourage students to bring a 100% Solution to Waste Litterless Lunch every Tuesday and Wednesday.  This means bringing lunch in a lunch bag or box, packing food in re-usable containers, bringing drinks in a reusable drink container, using cutlery that is re-usable (other than plastic disposable cutlery) and avoiding all waste (zip lock bags, wrappers, disposable water bottles).

• Green Bin Pilot Project
We are the only school in Waterloo Region that is a part of the Green Bin program.  Our efforts are contributing to the Region’s study of the feasibility of launching the Green Bin program in other schools.

• Zero Garbage in the Breakfast Club
Our Breakfast program is proud of its “zero garbage” initiative.  Everything that the students use goes in the green bin.  That includes food scraps, paper plates, paper cups and biodegradable cutlery.  No garbage is generated!

• Schoolyard Greening
Our Greening Committee has an ongoing plan to further enhance our schoolyard.  A recent initiative was the installation of a labyrinth.

We continue to work on the EcoSchools initiatives and hope to once again be certified as a Gold School this school year.
